2026 World Series schedule: dates, format and home-field plan

The 2026 World Series schedule begins Friday, October 23, with Game 1 at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. Major League Baseball’s published schedule lists the series through Saturday, October 31, if a Game 7 is needed. The dates are a quick way to plan around baseball’s final series, but the number of games actually played depends on which club reaches four wins first.

The championship is a best-of-seven series between the American League and National League champions. That means the World Series can end in four, five, six or seven games. A date marked “if necessary” is held for a potential game; it is not played when one team has already won four games.

MLB lists the broadcast window in Eastern Time. Fans in other parts of the United States should convert it to their local zone and check the league’s schedule again on game day. The official schedule is subject to change, and weather or other operational issues can affect a start time.

Which team hosts the first games?

The 2026 schedule places the National League champion at home for Games 1 and 2. Games 3 and 4 move to the American League champion’s ballpark, and Game 5 is there if needed. If the series returns for Games 6 and 7, it goes back to the National League club. The league champion with the better regular-season record has home-field advantage for this year’s opening games.

This order is useful for understanding travel and rest between games. It does not mean the home team is guaranteed to win, and it does not change the four-win requirement. In a seven-game series, teams travel after Game 2 and again before a possible Game 6. The scheduled off days provide a pause in the series, but the actual rest each club receives can depend on how many games are played.

How a seven-game series works

The first club to win four games becomes the World Series champion. A sweep ends the series after four games; if each club wins three of the first six, Game 7 decides the title. This is why schedule pages show all seven possible dates even though most years do not use every one.

The home designation alternates by series block rather than switching every game: the NL champion hosts the first two, the AL champion hosts the next three, and the NL champion hosts the final two if necessary. MLB has scheduled the 2026 off days after Game 2 and after Game 5. Those dates matter when reading the sequence, especially if the matchup is still undecided late in the series.

How to read “if necessary”

Game 5, Game 6 and Game 7 are conditional dates. If one team reaches four victories before Game 5, the rest of the schedule disappears. If the series is 3–1 after Game 4, Game 5 is played; if it is 4–0, it is not. The same logic applies to Games 6 and 7: each is played only if neither side has clinched the championship.

That distinction helps avoid confusion when search results display a full schedule as though every date were confirmed as a game. The dates are reserved windows. Check the official postseason page for series status, the next game number and whether the next date is still required.

Broadcast and local start times

MLB’s 2026 World Series announcement lists FOX, FOX Deportes and FOX One for the games, with national radio coverage also available. Availability can depend on a viewer’s television package, streaming subscription and location. Use the current MLB listing and the broadcaster’s own schedule to confirm a particular feed. A listing in Eastern Time is not the same as the stadium’s local time for fans traveling to the ballpark.

The schedule and results pages can change as teams advance and dates pass. If an article, social post or third-party schedule disagrees with MLB’s current page, use the league’s latest update. Avoid assuming an unplayed optional game will occur; verify whether the series has already ended.

Official schedule sources

MLB’s 2026 postseason schedule lists each World Series date, start time and “if necessary” status. The league’s World Series FAQ explains the best-of-seven format and broadcast information. These official sources should be checked again on game day for updates.
